Dental Implant Treatment Process

Understanding the timeline and what to expect at each stage

Complete Treatment Timeline

Total time: 3-9 months typically (varies based on healing, bone grafting needs, and individual factors)

Phase 1: Consultation and Planning (1-2 weeks)

What happens:

  • Comprehensive oral exam and medical history review
  • 3D imaging (CBCT cone beam scan) to assess bone density and anatomy
  • Treatment planning: implant positioning, timing, cost estimate
  • Discussion of sedation options and any pre-treatment needs

Your questions to ask: Total cost, timeline, success rate, provider credentials, what's included in quote

Phase 2: Pre-Treatment (If Needed) (0-6 months)

Possible procedures before implant placement:

  • Tooth extraction: If failing tooth still present, wait 3-6 months for site healing
  • Bone grafting: If insufficient bone, graft placed 3-6 months before implant
  • Sinus lift: Upper arch cases with minimal bone above sinus
  • Periodontal treatment: Gum disease must be resolved first

Immediate implant option: In some cases, implant can be placed same day as extraction (case-dependent)

Phase 3: Implant Surgery (Single appointment, 1-2 hours)

The procedure:

  1. Anesthesia: Local numbing + optional sedation (nitrous, oral, or IV)
  2. Access: Small incision in gum to expose bone
  3. Implant placement: Precise drilling and titanium post placement into bone
  4. Closure: Gum sutured over implant (or healing cap placed if non-submerged)
  5. Temporary tooth (if needed): Flipper denture or temporary bridge for esthetics

Pain level: Most patients report less pain than tooth extraction. Discomfort managed with medication.

Phase 4: Osseointegration Healing (3-6 months)

What's happening: Bone cells grow around implant, fusing it securely to jaw

  • Timeline: Lower jaw 3-4 months, upper jaw 4-6 months (upper bone less dense)
  • Diet: Soft foods for first 2 weeks, then gradual return to normal (avoid area during healing)
  • Oral care: Gentle brushing, saltwater rinses, avoid disturbing surgical site
  • Follow-ups: Typically at 1 week (suture removal), 1 month, 3 months

Red flags to report: Severe pain, excessive swelling after 3 days, implant mobility, fever

Phase 5: Abutment Placement (Single appointment, 30-60 minutes)

What happens:

  • Small incision to expose healed implant (if buried)
  • Abutment (connector post) screwed onto implant
  • Gum tissue shaped around abutment
  • 2-week healing for gum tissue to mature around abutment
  • Impressions taken for final crown

Note: Some systems place abutment at time of implant surgery (one-stage approach)

Phase 6: Final Crown Delivery (1-2 weeks after impressions)

What happens:

  • Custom crown fabricated in dental lab (porcelain or zirconia)
  • Crown tried in, checked for fit, color match, bite alignment
  • Crown cemented or screwed onto abutment
  • Final bite adjustments and polishing

Result: Fully functional, natural-looking tooth replacement
